Qualifications: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey and certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the Board of Nursing required. BLS certification is required. Minimum of one year Adult Medical/Surgical and/or Pediatric experience within the last three years required. Certification in infusion therapy from the Infusion Nurse Society (INS) and/or the Association of Vascular Access preferred. Must be knowledgeable of Infection Control Standards/Practices, National Patient Safety Goals/Practices, NJ State Nurse Practice Art, Department of Health Standards, University Hospital Policies and Procedures and Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice. Ability to employ problem solving techniques and critical thinking. Effective interpersonal communication skills.
Credentials Required: Current NJ License & Registration as a Registered Nurse; Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse; BLS
Responsibilities: The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse for Vascular Access is to initiate peripheral venous access and insertion of catheters and devices to deliver fluid, nutrition and medication therapy for inpatient. The devices for insertion are limited to angiocath, butterflies and peripherally inserted catheters including mid-line catheters and may include PICC line insertion and maintenance. These responsibilities also include patient education and discharge planning. The Advanced Practice Nurse for Vascular Access is a member of the patient’s health care team with the focused responsibility of IV Access and shared responsibility in the collaboration and coordination of patient care needs and safety. The Advanced Practice Nurse for Vascular Access collaborates with Interventional Radiology staff. Serves as an expert in the field of vascular access and is a resource to staff. As a member of the Medical Staff, the Advanced Practice Nurse demonstrates standards of professional practice that includes ethical decision making, job activities related to quality assessment/improvement, self-evaluation, leadership and research.
