Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Successful completion of twenty hours of training with the Newark Community Street Team, including Trauma Informed Care training and orientation to the trauma service (to be provided upon hire) required. Three (3) years of recent experience, such as any combination of student, volunteer, or work experience, which involves the Newark area and its community resources is required. Participation in community organizations, and first hand understanding of issues related to interpersonal violence preferred. Sensitivity to a substance abuse environment preferred. Must have basic understanding of use of computers and software applications, and the ability to perform basic internet searches. Must have demonstrated interest in serving the Newark community. Must be able to work independently and seek guidance when necessary. Must have good listening skills. Must have demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, and have the ability to work with individuals of a diverse background.
Responsibilities: The primary purpose of the Community Outreach Worker is to serve as a role model and community liaison to individuals who are enrolled in the University Hospital Violence Intervention Program (HVIP). Outreach Workers are expected to develop relationships based on trust with patients, provide reliable information, appropriate community resource referrals, and emotional support to victims of violence who are being treated in the hospital and have agreed to participate in the program. This individual will function as a core member of the trauma patient care team.
